In order to compete with other world-class institutions in recruiting the best faculty, the PSD needs to produce very competitive start-up packages that include funding for research assistants, post-docs, lab space, and seed money for research. For example, the average startup package for a junior experimental chemist is between $500,000 - $1,000,000.
As with recruiting for faculty, the U of C also competes for the best and brightest students. Being able to offer them fellowship support enables the PSD to retain some of their best students to work along side our faculty in their research and teaching duties.
Research has been the backbone of the University of Chicago's mission, and especially in the Physical Sciences Division. In the PSD, we strive to create and foster an environment of open, highly interactive collaboration. This environment allows students to work with faculty in departments other than their own, and it ensures that researchers are continually stimulated by ideas from outside their own areas of expertise. Take a look at the division's Research In Progress.
